2 - Journey From Zanskar
|

"How far would you go to save your dying culture?"
"Sometimes you have to give up your children in order to save them."
Zanskar is a precarious Tibetan border region in an extremely remote area of northern India, even more inaccessible than nearby Ladakh, described by the Dalai Lama as "vital to the survival of Tibetan Buddhism".With the building of a road connecting Padum, the heart of Zanskar, with Leh, the heart of neighboring Ladakh, the route which previously took up to two days by car will take only 4-5 hours. As economic growth descends on Zanskar it will bring with it an end to this unbroken Buddhist social tradition.
On the instructions of the Dalai Lama, two monks from Zanskar's Stongde Monastery do everything in their power to ensure the Buddhist roots of Zanskari culture are preserved through education. They embark on a journey to take 17 local children, aged 4 to 12, on a treacherous journey, over a 17,500 foot pass, to a school in the town of Manali. We are very pleased to be hosting a special screening of the film "Journey From Zanskar" at Kagyu Samye Dzong on Sunday 29th May, 4.30 - 6.30 pm. The director, Frederick Marx, will be here in person to exhibit the film and hold a Q&A, a great opportunity to learn more about the fascinating trials and tribulations of the several years it took to make the film.

3 - The Seven Points of Mind Training with Lama Zangmo
|
"Continual practice of meditation and attention to everyday conduct go together - they are two aspects of practice rather than two unrelated activities....When we work with both aspects, the habits of ego-clinging fall away...."
So writes Ken McCloud in the introduction to his translation of The Great Path of Awakening which sets out the Seven Points of Mind Training and the sayings / slogans associated with them.
In these classes, Lama Zangmo will go through the Seven Points of Mind Training to help put the focus on regular practice, applied to daily life in a practical way.
The Seven Points of Mind Training takes place on Thursday evenings, from 12th May - 16th June, 7.00 - 8.30 pm. You can book your place via the course page on the website. Donations can be made by clicking on the PayPal button at the bottom of the page.

4 - Stress less! A mindful approach with Alistair Appleton

|
Living in large cities like London is an inherently stressful business. Human beings - like all animals - have bodily systems designed to respond to and process stress. But we're designed for short sharp bursts not the blanket stress of living in a crowded city.
Mindfulness is a meditation practice with a 2,500 year pedigree and this weekend course introduces us to this incredible stress buster. Combining his experience as a long-term meditator and practising psychotherapist, Alistair works with the group to explore the causes of stress, how we perpetuate it and how we can release it and allow the body to down-regulate us back to a more vital state.
Stress less! A mindful approach with Alistair Appleton takes place on the weekend of 14th-15th May, 9.00 - 5.00 pm. Book your place now via the Mindsprings website. Cost: £90 (£60 concessions).

5 - Impermanence, karma and interdependence with Gelong Thubten
|
A course exploring the Buddhist teachings on the impermanent and interconnected nature of all things. Without understanding this, we fall into the trap of clinging to an illusion of permanence, and we lose sight of the importance of the effects of our actions.
The word karma is the Sanskrit term for action, encompassing not only the initial action itself, but also all its consequences. Thus it is called 'karma, cause and effect'. A seed does not cease to exist when it falls into the ground: it just disappears from sight, to develop later into a shoot which eventually becomes a fully-matured plant. Like buried seeds in winter, the imprints of actions rest dormantly in the 'storehouse consciousness', as potential prime causes of future experience. When this psychological potential meets with certain supportive circumstances - the equivalent of the seed being awakened by the spring sun and rain - results start to emerge. Thus it is not until one meets the trigger of certain people or places that a specific karma from past lives will start to manifest...read the full course description on the website.
Impermanence, karma and interdependence with Gelong Thubten starts on Friday 27th May, 7.00 - 8.30 pm, and continues over the weekend of 28th -29th May, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm. You can book your place using the PayPal button at the bottom of the course page.
