Welcome to the April newsletter which has a very strong focus on Earth Day. Anyone who has seen or heard of the BBC's Blue Planet 2 series will be well aware of the impact that plastic is having on the wider environment. In response to this, part of our Earth Day programme will feature a talk by Maria Arceo, an artist and environmentalist whose latest line of work uses discarded plastic objects collected from various locations in the Thames. 1 - Earth Day at Samye Dzong LondonAs most of you know, Kagyu Samye Dzong London will host a free event to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday the 22 of April. The day will include a range of speakers, films, workshops and activities to inspire others to end plastic pollution and protect the environment. In our previous Newsletter we profiled Satish Kumar as one of the speakers on the day. Here we introduce some of the other activities that will be happening on the day, and we will soon send out a Special Edition Newsletter with the detailed programme. We look forward to seeing you there! Buddhism and the EnvironmentBuddhism has long been synonymous with living in harmony with nature. Lama Zangmo will talk about ethics, highlighting that acknowledgement of our interdependence are key to environmental protection. There will also be a special video message from Lama Yeshe Rinpoche. The programme line-up also includes The Effects of Humans on the Sea with Maria Arceo Maria Arceo is an environmentalist and artist who will highlight the long-term impacts of plastic debris entering marine environments. Her latest line of art work utilises discarded plastic objects collected from various locations in the Thames. Introduction to Permaculture with Kevin Mascarenhas Kevin Mascarenhas will lead a workshop that will explore the founding principles of permaculture, its ethics, and where to start the journey when creating a more sustainable way of living. Submit a Poem for Earth Day Make an Environmental Commitment Ask a Question Bring your own cup or non-plastic water bottle And last but not least Other activities include a Green Exhibition space, kids activities and sun-watching (weather dependent). More information will go up on the website as we get closer to the day. We hope to see as many of you as possible. |
