About the event

Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd January

7pm – 8.30pm, please note it is required to attend both Wednesday and Thursday teaching sessions.

In the past, our Founder, Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche, strongly encouraged this fasting practice retreat, particularly for lay people who may not have much opportunity for intensive practice in their daily life.

The practice is based on Chenrezig who is the embodiment of loving kindness and compassion. It is specifically aimed at developing compassion for all the beings who endure great hunger, thirst and pain.

There will be 8 sets of Nyungney, at Kagyu Samye Ling monastery in March, each consisting of two days and one extra morning session. On the first day of each set, participants are permitted food and drink which is offered at specific times.  On the second day, participants fast completely (not eating or drinking) and also remain silent.  Vows are taken with the Lama during the first session of each day.

It is possible to participate in just one set, up to 8 sets.

At the request of those who wish to do the coming Nyungney retreat in Samye Ling in March, Gelong Thubten will give an introduction to the practice over two evenings. Thubten has himself completed 200 pairs of Nyungney in the past.

It is a requirement to have taken refuge and to have received the Chenrezig empowerment. Please bring along the Nyungney text, available from the KSD London shop.

The £5 registration fee is not a payment for the course. There is no charge for our courses and teachings. However when hosting courses by a visiting course leader, we ask all participants to make a donation to help cover travel expenses and towards an offering for the visiting teacher. Please give what you can afford.
