This day marks the birth of Prince Siddharta Gautama in Lumbini, present-day Nepal around 500BC. After he reached enlightenment he became known as Buddha Shakyamuni or just the Buddha. He began teaching methods that would allow others to reach enlightenment, and thereby be freed from all suffering, and his teachings became the foundation of all Buddhist traditions and practices.
This day falls on the seventh day of Saga Dawa, the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. Saga Dawa is the most sacred time of the year for Tibetans where the results of all activity, good or bad, are considered to be multiplied. So it is very common for Tibetan Buddhists to make offerings, give alms, go on pilgrimage, chant prayers, circumambulate holy shrines, buy and free animals destined for slaughter and do prostrations.
Join us in Samye Dzong London for an evening of auspicious prayers dedicated to the long life of His Holiness 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje, the swift rebirth of our precious Founder, Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche, as well as the long life and good health of our Abbot, Choje Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, and all the great Masters and Lineage Holders who work ceaselessly for the benefit of others.
After the prayers there will be some food and refreshments offered. Offerings of food to share are welcome.
