Monthly newsletter
Dear Lama

Welcome to the December Newsletter and, on our masthead this month, a last look at the Shrine Room of Manor Place.  This is the final month of activity before the last residents leave and the building is handed over in early January, but between now and then there is still a lot to be done, and plenty going on at Spa Road as well. To find out more, read on...

Kagyu Samye Dzong aims to provide a place of peace and tranquility for all in central London, with the shrine room available for individuals to come and sit during the day.  For full details of the Centre, including the programme of evening meditations and forthcoming events, visit the website.
News in Brief

  • Winter closure - the Centre will close at 9.00 pm on Sunday 20th December and reopen at 9.00 am on Saturday 9th January
  • New programme for 2016 - The new programme for 2016 is gradually going up on the website.  So far we have most of the events up until the end of May, and should have the full programme in place by the end of December. The printed programme will be available when we reopen in January.
  • Volunteer opportunities:
Cooking lunch for the sanghaeach Tuesday
during their weekly retreat day. After lunch you will be welcome to join the sangha for the rest of the retreat.
A cook for 1 day a week - we need somebody who can cook for the sangha and volunteers on either a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday each week. This gives our resident cook, Radu, a non-cooking day during which he can clean the kitchen thoroughly.
Our Tibetan Tearoom is also looking for regular weekly helpers. Whether you have experience or not, if you are interested in coming to help once a week, do get in touch with the office. You'll learn how to make great cappuccinos!
If you would like to join our wonderful team of volunteers at the Centre, please
    contact the office.
  • Simply Meditation Days - while Manor Place has closed, the chance to regularly spend time in more extended meditation with others hasn't. We will be running a regular meditation day each month throughout 2016, with the first one on Sunday 24th January.  See the website for full details.
  • Tibetan Language for Beginners - if you're interested in learning Tibetan, this is your big chance.  On Friday evenings, from 5th Feb - 25th March (7.00 - 8.30 pm), Tenzin Samten will be covering the basics with the alphabet and learning to read and write, as well as a bit of vocabulary along the way, but focusing mainly on developing good reading and writing skills and good pronunciation, with a view to continuing the class further.  Full details can be found on the website.

"Dear Friends,

A year has almost gone by already and as you may be aware, Kagyu Samye Dzong London made a commitment at the beginning of 2015, in honour of our Founder Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche, to offer our Dharma courses without a course fee, on a donation basis. We decided to try this for one year and at the end of the year asses how it went. It therefore seems appropriate to give you some feedback now on this past year.

We have been very encouraged by the number of people attending the courses; numbers have risen dramatically, which is a very good thing. The fact that the Dharma is available to everyone is very wonderful, and we are very happy to enable that.

However, we have found that now, when people reserve places on courses, they either do not turn up or just come to some of the classes, and so each week the attendance varies greatly. This means that those people we had to turn away, due to a course being fully booked, are missing an opportunity to learn. If people are very casual about attendance, it also gives a feeling of lack of respect for the teachings and lack of commitment.

For that reason we ask that you only....."

We are now entering the last few weeks of our time in Manor Place. Much has been accomplished with the help of many volunteers in recent weeks, and we'd like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped so far. There is a little way to go yet before we are finished, so if you have time here are a few dates for your diary:

Jumble sale -  Running over two days there is plenty of bric-a-brac, books, DVDs, furniture and even a full set of golf clubs!!!
Saturday 5th Dec, 2.00 - 5.00
Sunday 6th Dec, 10.00 - 4.00

Volunteer weekends - just two more:
12th - 13th Dec, 9.30 - 5.00 and
19th - 20th Dec, 9.30 - 5.00

Help is also still welcome during the day time on Wednesdays to Fridays. If you are able to help us in any way, please get in touch with the office at Spa Road either by email, or by phoning us on 020-3327 1650.

"Why is it so difficult to do meditation practice? Is it because it's too difficult, or because it's too easy? I think the answer is too easy. That's why we don't know how to do it."

His Holiness the 17th Karmapa.

This course will be illustrated with accounts of the life of the Buddha, the perfect example, and the noble eightfold path - the perfect way to be.  Practical meditative exercises will be shared and there will be silent time to practise together.

We may have the intention to meditate but it is easy to lose track and forget to practise. So we need to cultivate some kind of "marriage" of intention and attention so that we do not get lost in thought all the time.

We are so often caught up either in our worries and anxieties, or we are overly concerned about other peoples' lives. It's no use having a prescription framed on the wall and never using it. We must "walk the walk" in order to practise a "mindful and kind" life.
We can't change other people but we can wake up our own potential and go on to creatively influence the world around us. Everything we were ever looking for can be found within - as long as we go deep enough to find the truth and know where to look.
This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in meditation and mindfulness, whether beginner or more experienced, whether buddhist or non-buddhist.

Motivation and Meditation runs over the weekend of 5th - 6th December from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm.  You can book your place via the course page on the website.  Donations can be made by clicking on the PayPal button at the bottom of the page.

4 - A Precious Garland of the Sublime Path - with Lama Zangmo

In "A Precious Garland" Gampopa gives precise instructions on the correct view, meditation and conduct and succinctly outlines in 28 categories what we need to know at every stage of the path in order to perfect our spiritual practice.

Lama Zangmo will go through this text, and the course will consist of monthly Saturday classes with teachings on the text along with practice instructions for a graduated daily meditation schedule at home.

It is suited for those who would like to study Buddhism in more depth and wish to develop their understanding and meditation practice. People are asked to attend the full course and commit to a regular daily meditation practice.

Full details of this course can be found on the website.
A Precious Garland of the Sublime Path with Lama Zangmo runs on one Saturday a month, commencing on 23rd January.  You can book your place via the course page on the website.  Donations can be made by clicking on the PayPal button at the bottom of the page.
