1 - And they're off.. ..for a quick 500 mile bike ride to Scotland!

As I sit here writing this, team "Thames to Tea Party" are now well into their second day of cycling - buoyed up no doubt by the fact that they've already generated over £7,400 in sponsorship, nearly three quarters of the way to their target of £10,000. For a brief account of yesterday's events however, I'll let one of our riders--Neil--speak for himself:

"We set off on this, the first day of our epic 500 mile ride for kagyu samye dzong london, with the sound of conch shells ringing in our ears and the flutter of katas around our necks. Residents and supporters turned out, despite the fine drizzle, to give us a heart-warming sent off. Thanks to all who came, and thanks to lama zangmo for her words of encouragement and reminder that all activities--cycling included--can be practice. I took this advice too literally when I let go of my attachment to the road crossing Lambeth bridge. Also known as falling off. It wasn't my--or the team's--last mishap of the day, but I'll leave them to tell you themselves (or not). I must add my thanks to our sponsors and superb support team."

To read what the rest of the team have to say about day one, or to check their progress throughout the week, check out their blog.

It's not too late to sponsor our riders - we are still looking to raise at least another £2,400 and every little bit counts, no matter how small. I know it would be great for our riders to get to Samye Ling and find that their target has been reached - or at least to see the total rising throughout the ride. Don't feel you have to hold back, feel free to visit http://www.justgiving.com/bikingforbuddhism and make your contribution now.

2 - A place to escape the hustle and bustle.. Will Harwood writes:

"A lot of people who I meet on a day-to-day basis, they comment on how peaceful it is in the Centre. I think when people come, even if its just once a week, or once a month, it makes such a difference for them to have a place where they can escape from the hustle and bustle and all the stress of being in london, and be able to relax here. For other people there is a deeper meaning because this is where they met the Dharma in the first place. Everybody has got to meet the Dharma somewhere to get
involved in Buddhism. You need a place you can come to and discover it. All the precious teachers who have come here, Lama Yeshe Rinpoche, Akong Rinpoche, we had Thrangu Rinpoche here last year, hopefully we will have the Karmapa quite soon. I have seen some plans for a future building, and
there is a room for the Karmapa there. Perhaps in a few years the Karmapa will come to a new Centre. We need a place where we can meet these teachers, and practice the Dharma, I think Centres like this one in London are absolutely crucial."
