2 - Property update Lama Zangmo returned from Spain recently where she saw Lama Yeshe, who is encouraging us all to have faith and continue looking in the 3 cicles indicated by H.H. Karmapa. So far, still, nothing definite has come up. The Landsdowne Club on Mare Street unfortunately sold before we were able to make a fast track application to National Heritage. But it is important to remember that the market moves quickly and that there is always the possibility of something new turning up in an area already covered. In the meantime we have re-measured the Samye Dzong building and established some more precise figures. An updated building description is available from the office and soon also on the Samye Dzong website. It emerged that the building is actually slightly smaller than originally estimated, it is 9,500 sq.ft. rather than 10,000 sq.ft. Having measured individual rooms we have concluded that the centre could run in a smaller building (minimum 6,000 sq.ft.). This could work if, for example, we combined the tea rooms and library into one and had less dormitory space, or ran some workshops in the shrine room. So for anybody who is in contact with estate agents, we are now asking for a building size of approximately 6,000 to 10,000 sq. ft., in a price bracket between £700,000 and £1,000,000. Also it may be helpful to give agents the postcodes for the relevant areas, remembering that in some cases only a part of the post code area is within the circle. The post codes are:

3 - Festive Charity Fair raises over £4,000 In "A song of the weather", Flanders and Swann sang "Dark November brings the fog..." Well the Festive Charity Fair didn't suffer from fog - but rain? Our prayers for fine sunny weather appeared to fall somewhat short as, on Saturday 22nd November, the clouds gathered and the heavens opened! Despite this, over £4,000 was raised. A precise figure can't be given as, even at this stage, money is still trickling in, but the £4,000 mark has now been passed. We would like to offer a great big thank you to all those who were able to pitch in and help one way or another: donors of gifts, prizes, toys, CDs, DVDs, games, clothes, food, those who cooked and baked, who helped prepare, copy and distribute leaflets and posters in the days and weeks beforehand, those who loaned stalls and equipment to run them, those who wrapped prizes and helped decorate the Centre, those who helped clear up afterwards - and if you helped and aren't in any of these categories you have our thanks too. And of course biggest thanks of all to the two people who took on the task of organising and co-ordinating the event in the first place - Annie Finlayson and Sheena King. If anybody would like to find out how hard they really worked, feel free to organise the next one! I'm sure that Sheena and Annie will be more than willing to offer lots of moral support. |
