POSITIVE MINDSTATES:
With Alistair Appleton

Sat 17 Oct - Sun 18 Oct. 10am - 4pm. £55.

A positive mind state is more precious than a house full of precious things. Even if the most wonderful thing in the world happens to us, if we're feeling anxious or depressed, it means nothing. Conversely, everything seems positive when we’re feeling happy and open-hearted. This weekend looks at a series of meditative exercises aimed at promoting the 4 positive mind states known in Buddhism as the Divine Abiding; Loving-kindness; Compassion and Joy & Equanimity. Suitable for beginners. Bring vegetarian lunch to share.

Alistair is a popular teacher of meditation and mindfulness who is dedicated to promoting the huge benefits of these skills. He is also a successful television presenter.

COLLOQUIAL TIBETAN LANGUAGE COURSE
with Adele Tomlin

Thursdays 7-8.30pm, starting 29th October, finishing 10th December. £50

Many people who are new to learning Tibetan are often surprised that there are two forms of Tibetan: Colloquial and Classical. Colloquial Tibetan is the spoken everyday language whereas classical Tibetan is the language of the Dharma scriptures. However, all Tibetan Dharma teachers use both colloquial and classical Tibetan when giving oral Dharma teachings. Therefore, if a student is really serious about studying and practising Tibetan Buddhism in the native Tibetan language, both colloquial and classical Tibetan are essential.

The emphasis of the course will be on speaking and listening. New vocabulary and a small amount of grammar will also be introduced each week. Minimum pre-requisites for the course will be to know the alphabet and how to read.

Adele Tomlin became a student and practitioner in the Karma Kagyu tradition after taking refuge with HH the 17th Karmapa in March 2005. Since then Adele has studied both colloquial and classical Tibetan intensively in India and Nepal and has briefly worked as a translator at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) in Dharamsala, India.

The cost is £50 to be booked and paid in advance. Book your place on this course now by phone on 020-7708 8969 or by email to manorplace@samye.org
